22 Signs You’re An Ex-Convent School Girl

1. You’re cool with doing the heavy lifting – as long as it’s manageable. What? Wait for the guys to come help out? Girl, we went through 10 years of school without a single guy in sight (unless you count that wimpy math teacher), and we did just fine.

2. You have that one group of girlfriends that you know will be there for you. FOREVER.

3. “Friendship problems” don’t throw you anymore. We’ve been through 4 years in a school full of girls going through puberty all at the same time. It was hell. There would always be at least one person in any classroom PMSing at any one time – plus we pretty much hung out with the same group of girls so much that our cycles literally synched up. Yes, it’s not a myth; it’s true. Which basically means WAR every few weeks. I repeat. It was hell.

4. But then again, that’s what made our friendships stronger than anything else in the world.

Gossip Girl

5. You went through a lesbian phase – or there was at least one moment in your life where you actually looked at another girl and went “Hm. Not bad.”

6. You recognise that lap dance scene – yes, it’s from the L word.

7. You remember the first time you wore a skirt without shorts underneath – your thighs had never felt cooler

8. Lesbian tendencies aside, a lot of your conversations with friends had to do with Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Josh Hartnett, Jude Law… and well, every male celebrity that came to our attention.

9. For years after secondary school, you never wore a skirt that went below your knees, thanks to a ridiculously strict dress code that you had to follow for a full decade.

10. You look pretty presentable and kind of demure to strangers. But when you’re with your friends, it’s a whole different story.

fuck you very much

11. But in spite of that, the morals you learnt at school have somehow stuck with you through all these years.

12. And you still kind of remember the words to Our Father.

13. And some hymns will never ever leave your mind for good. Like As The Deer. What was with that song?

14. You went through a major vain phase.

15. And have heard people bitch about their weight one too many times

16. You understand that skirt rolling, is an ART.

17. And you hate it when young girls cross the line and go full slut.

18. You’re definitely not afraid to speak your mind.

19. Because somehow we’ve been trained to be strong, independent women.

21. And at times it sort of felt like this:

22. The experience, memories and friendships were all kind of worth it in the end.

At 23 years & 3 months, I have been working for a little more than a year after studying for about 20 years. All those 20 years of nursery, kindergarten, prep, grade school, high school and college were spent in exclusive all-girl schools run by conservative religious institutions. Though the schools were always really close to exclusive all-boy schools, the only time we got to interact with one another were underground soirees and school fairs. So for all you boys (and girls) who are wondering what it was like to have no other guys in the school besides a couple of teachers and staff members, it wasn’t all bad. It was actually pretty fun. Natalie made a brilliant list of signs that got me laughing and reminiscing about those wonderful years filled with triumphs, struggles, and the friendships that will last a lifetime.

  15. @Natalie: Sooo I guess you’re not taking me seriously and we can’t have a friendly discussion about it then……………I was merely trying to explain how what you’re posting is a form of misogyny. But I don’t want to be calling you out by being a full on misogynist because I’m sure you’re not. Hence, the term “internalized misogyny” which is misogyny that you don’t even realize because society has ingrained it into us to think like that! I don’t know which part of my post made me come across being misogynistic, like if there is please DO let me know.

If a woman can’t be honest about her own opinions regarding other women and her own life experience without people like you accusing her of “internalized misogyny,” then yeah, I do believe that is a form of hating other women. What, I can’t be critical of women because I’m one too? We shouldn’t be expected to support/embrace/condone everything other women say or do out of some misguided sense of loyalty, and to suggest otherwise is asking women to be hypocrites. No bueno.

      1. Firstly, just because I called her out for internalized misogyny doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing, I am not condoning or shaming her for it because it is a common thing I come across so often. Clearly I came across really brash here but I have my reasons for that, my initial intentions were to help her realize how her ideals about women, could be harmful to women. I explained very patiently and carefully in my first post about how this was harmful. I wasn’t trying to put her down for her opinions of certain women in society and I sure did not expect her to embrace my idea. Let me make it clear that that was not my intention, and that I’m sorry if you got vibes that made it feel that way. However clearly she doesn’t even want to consider my views from the very sarcastic response I received, so that’s that.
